‘Usman’ death toll hits 61

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is validating reports that landslides and flashfloods spawned by Tropical Depression Usman left 61 people dead in regions 5 and 8.

NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said 18 persons are missing in the two regions.

“The NDRRMC Operation Centers and Regional DRRM Operation Centers of the affected regions are still on alert status and are continously monitoring ongoing response efforts in the affected areas,” Jalad said.

Meanwhile, 89 personnel from the Philippine National Police, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine Air Force, the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard, together with Provincial Incident Management Team are conducting search, rescue, and retrieval operations in Tiwi, Nabua, Iriga and Buhi towns which were hit by landslides and floods.

Meanwhile, the tropical depression damaged rice and corn crops worth P195.36 million, according to the Department of Agriculture.

The DA’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operation Center said 6,318 farmers were affected in the provinces of Quezon, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, and Samar.

The DA said Usman also damaged P16.9 million worth of fruit trees, vegetables and root crops.
