THE Philippine flag got torn in the middle of the flag-raising ceremony during the commemoration the 122nd death anniversary of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, in Luneta Park on Sunday morning.

As the public sang Lupang Hinirang at the Rizal Monument, the upper portion of the flag was partly ripped while honor guards from the Philippine Marines were pulling it up.

The ceremony, led by Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, continued nonetheless.

Officers lowered the torn flag and replaced it with a new one after the national anthem finished playing.

The event was held with the theme “Rizal 2018: Talino at Malasakit sa Isa’t Isa, Pundasyon ng Isang Malaya at Maunlad na Bansa.”

In her message, Robredo urged Filipinos to be reminded of Rizal’s vision of true freedom.

“In these times when ruthless practicality is foisted on us as virtue, and when respect for individual dignity is maligned as weakness, Rizal stands as a reminder that true freedom always goes hand in hand with kindness and integrity,” she said.
