THE death toll from tropical depression “Usman” climbed to 24 as its heavy rains caused landslides and floods in Southern Luzon and the Visayas, disaster authorities said on Sunday.
Edgar Posadas, spokesman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), said, however, that the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), which is manning the Management of the Dead and Missing (MDM) for the council, has yet to validate the figure.
Of the 24, 18 came from the Bicol region and six from Eastern Visayas.
Posadas said three missing persons were also recorded in the Eastern Visayas, which Administrator Ricardo Jalad of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed.
Based on the OCD report, most of the deaths were from landslides.
Of the 18, five were from Albay, four from Sorsogon, two in Camarines Sur and seven from Masbate.
OCD Eastern Visayas Director Henry Torres said the four dead were from Lope de Vega in Northern Samar who either drowned or died in a landslide while the two from Paranas in Western Samar drowned.
