A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Davao Oriental before noon on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
At the same time, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning following the quake that was felt at about 11:39 a.m., 162 kilometers (km) southeast of Governor Generoso town. Its origin was tectonic and had a depth of 49 km.
The National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning System (NWS-PTWS) released a hazardous wave warning for all coasts inside the 300-km radius of the quake, which includes parts of Indonesia and the Philippines.
“Tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake center,” the warning said.
According to Phivolcs, the quake that struck at 11:39 a.m. was 162 kilometers (km) southeast of Governor Generoso town. Its origin was tectonic and had a depth of 49 km.
Minor sea level disturbances such as “strong currents and rapid rise and fall of seawaters” can be expected in Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao City, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
Phivolcs advised people living near the shoreline to move farther inland. Fisherfolks were also advised to secure their boats and stay offshore.
“Tsunami” or a series of waves five meters high or higher occurs when an earthquake is shallow and strong enough to displace parts of the seabed and disturb the mass of water. JOVE MOYA
