A BOY was rushed to a hospital in Manila after he ingested a firecracker, bringing the number of those injured in the run-up to the New Year to 24, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Wednesday based on reports from 60 hospitals nationwide.

The DOH said the running total was from December 21 to 26, 2018, which is 54 percent lower than the 52 recorded in the same period in 2017.

Of the total from December 21 to 26, 2018, 11 new cases were reported, including the unidentified six-year-old from Tondo who was brought to the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) on Tuesday.

The DOH said the boy ingested a “pili”, an illegal firecracker containing potassium nitrate and potassium chloride, both toxic substances.

Of the 24 reported incidents, 22 took place in the streets and mostly involving the use of illegal fireworks.

Of the 22, 18 suffered from burn injuries, including three who needed to have their fingers amputated while six others sustained eye injuries.

They were given anti-tetanus shots and medicines, the DOH said. CATHERINE MODESTO
