THE New People’s Army (NPA) violated its own ceasefire when it clashed with government troops in Rizal, resulting in the wounding of a militiaman, a spokesman for the Philippine Army said on Wednesday.
Capt. Patrick Jay Retumban of the Rizal-based 2nd Infantry Division (ID), said the incident with about 20 NPA rebels happened as soldiers were patrolling Rodriguez at about 12 noon on Tuesday, Christmas Day.
Brig. Gen. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr., commander of the Army’s 202nd Infantry Brigade, said civilians had tipped off the military in connection with the presence of NPA members and were reportedly planning to raid the Macaingalan patrol base at the village of Puray in Rodriguez.
The firefight lasted for five minutes, which resulted into the wounding on the leg of one member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu). The unidentified militiaman is in stable condition.
The Army suspects that the communist rebels are under the NPA Sub-Regional Party of the Regional Military Area in Calabarzon under the leadership of Jonathan “Boyong” Mopon.
This is the first incident that transpired between the NPA and the military since the ceasefire started at 12:01 a.m. on Monday and until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday. DEMPSEY REYES
