THE camp of the late Rep. Rodel Batocabe of AKO-Bicol party-list did not coordinate with the local police before he visited a gift-giving event in Albay, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Oscar Albayalde said on Wednesday.
“What we know here is that Congressman Batocabe went [in the event] without the coordination with the PNP,” Albayalde said in a news conference that was aired live from Albay.
The police, particularly the provincial office, could have increased security and may have possibly prevented the killing of Batocabe and his police detail, SPO1 Orlando Diaz.
Albayalde said Diaz was in-charge of coordinating with the local police for additional security in the area.
Batocabe and Diaz were gunned down on Saturday while attending a gift-giving event for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Daraga, with police eyeing six possible suspects.
The PNP chief also disclosed that they have a primary suspect in the killing of Batocabe, but did not elaborate, saying investigators needed to validate the information coming from text messages.
At the time of his death, Batocabe was a mayoralty candidate of Daraga in the 2019 midterm elections. DEMPSEY REYES
