Globe Telecom will shift to eight-digit landlines in Metro Manila in March next year in compliance with a National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) directive.
NTC Memorandum Order 10-10-2017 issued last year mandated telecommunications firms to migrate all subscribers under the “02” area code to eight-digit numbers, from the current seven, given increased consumer demand.
Globe was assigned a public telecommunications entity (PTE) identifier of “7”. With the shift, a subscriber with a current landline number of (02) 576-4567 will see this changed to (02) 7576-4567 in three months.
The telephone number format of Globe unit Bayan Telecommunications, meanwhile, will be changed to (02) 3499-XXXX from (02) 3000-XXXX.
“[The NTC] directive is to ensure there will be sufficient resource pool to cater to the rapid growth of landline customers in major cities,” the listed firm said in a statement on Monday.
Given a March 31, 2019 deadline to implement the shift, Globe said it would update its system on March 18 and that customers could experience some service disruptions from 12:00-5:00 a.m.
“We are working closely with the NTC and other telcos to assist affected customers before, during and after the migration. We would like to see all our customers being aware of this change before it comes into effect,” Globe General Counsel Froilan Castelo said.
The company said subscribers would be informed three months before the migration via text message, email, and social media.
After the migration, Globe will also have a recorded announcement for those who incorrectly dial the old seven-digit format.
Other PTEs covered in the NTC order have yet to issue their own statements, although PLDT, Inc.’s corporate business unit PLDT Alpha has an advisory on its website also setting a March 18, 2019 shift.
The telco has been assigned “8” as its PTE identifier, which means its customers will be given a (02) 8XXX-XXXX number.
The identifiers for other covered telcos in addition to Globe and Bayantel, according to the Alpha advisory, are 5799-YYYY (from 5300-YYYY) for ETPI/Telecomm Tech Phils., Inc. and 6699-YYYY (from 6000-YYYY) for ABS-CBN Convergence, Inc.
