A TOTAL of 143 persons have been arrested in Mindanao since January 1, 2018 for alleged “rebellion and other crimes,” according to military chief Benjamin Madrigal Jr.

Speaking on Monday at the joint session of Congress deliberating on the government’s request to extend martial law in Mindanao until 2019, Madrigal said all those arrested have been charged in court.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao after the Islamic State-linked Maute group attacked Marawi City on May 23, 2017.

In a joint session in December of that year, the Senate and House of Representatives voted to extend martial law in Mindanao until the end of 2018.

Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said, however, that “this undue prolongation of martial law in Mindanao would amount to perpetuity considering the length of time this declaration and extension had been made and it is an admission by the military and the police authorities that they have failed to achieve the purported objectives of martial law.” REINA TOLENTINO
