Lorenzana: ‘Death squad poses great danger of abuse, needs study’
THE military and defense establishments will “study” President Rodrigo Duterte’s proposal to form “sparrow” units against the New People’s Army (NPA), Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Wednesday but warned of “great danger of abuse or mistakes” if this will be carried out.
“We will study it very closely. Who will compose it, who will supervise it, who will be the targets [and] who will be accountable,” Lorenzana told reporters in a text message.
He said, however, that since the use of “sparrows” would involve “undercover operations,” there could be “mistakes in identifying their targets [is what I am referring to].”
“Baka kamukha lang o ininguso ng ibang tao (Maybe they just looked like someone or just referred to). One way to prevent this is for someone higher up to give the go signal after careful and thorough vetting,” Lorenzana said.
“There should be no blanket authority among the operatives [of the squad],” he added. DEMPSEY REYES
