UPDATE: 3 Marines, 7 Abu Sayyaf members killed in Sulu clash

THREE members of the Philippine Marine Corps and seven from the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) were killed in an encounter on Friday morning in Patikul, Sulu, the military said.

Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom), also said that three other Marines were injured while 12 others were apprehended and subject for questioning.

Troops from the 61st, 62nd and 64th Marine companies battled with the ASG bandits led by Alnijar Ekit and Aldi Alun in Barangay Timpook.

The Muslim extremist group was “forced” to withdraw and escape after seven of its members were killed in the firefight, Besana said, citing intelligence reports.

Recovered from the scene of the clash were an M14 rifle and seven M14 magazines.

Besana said pursuit operations were ongoing. DEMPSEY REYES, AL JACINTO
