28 injured in Negros stampede
BACOLOD CITY: Twenty-eight people were injured while one was initially reported in critical condition after a stampede at the municipal gym in Cauayan town on Thursday afternoon. Mayor John Rey Tabujara said about 5,000 residents gathered at the gym for a Pantawid Pamilya Family Day where games and a pageant were among the events. He said one of the contestants brought a stainless steel and steel basin with charcoal as props which emitted smoke. But one from the audience shouted “fire” upon seeing the props that caused the crowd to scamper to the exits. Many fell and stepped on by the rushing people from the gym, the mayor added. He said he has no idea if the person who shouted meant it as a prank, but was not identified. One of the victims, a 59-year-old, was initially reported in critical condition but was declared stable as of this filing. The injured, mostly women, were brought to the Cauayan District Hospital.
