Trainer predicts KO win for Ancajas

Delfin Boholst, strength and conditioning trainer of International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas has predicted the Filipino winning by way of knockout against Mexican challenger Alejandro Santiago Barrios when the two collide on Saturday (Manila time) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, USA.

Boholst, a former member of the national amateur boxing team from 2005 to 2012, said that if Ancajas’ performance during sparring is an indicator, then the 26-year-old champ is ready to run over Barrios comes Saturday.

“He (Ancajas) is really very hungry heading to the fight. He is too aggressive in sparring. We told him just to give his 60 to 70 percent power in sparring and training, but he’s giving too much,” Boholst, 35, told The Manila Times in Filipino on Thursday, a day before the weigh-in.

“There is a strong possibility that he can score a knockout although I don’t want to predict what round it would be.”

Boholst believes that stamina could spell trouble for Barrios (16-2-4 record with seven knockouts) when he face Ancajas (30-1-1 win-loss-draw record with 20 knockouts) this weekend.

“He (Barrios) is a typical Mexican fighter. But when I watched the way he fights, I noticed that he gets tired after five rounds. Medyo humihina at nag-iiba ang galaw. For the first to fifth round, medyo maganda kilos.”

Boholst said that Ancajas is mainly on a white meat diet and his hydration is being monitored tightly.

“Cramps are sign of dehydration but he’s experiencing none so far. We’ll go carbo loading tomorrow right after the weigh in.”

Boholst is working with chief trainer and manager Joven Jimenez and sparring partner boxer Mark Anthony Barriga in prepping up Ancajas for the fight.

Ancajas is coming off a unanimous decision win over fellow Filipino Jonas Sultan last May 26 in Fresno, California.
