‘Neneng’ threatens Batanes, powerful typhoon brews outside PAR

AS powerful typhoon “Mangkhut” lingers outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the low pressure area (LPA) north of Batanes turned into a tropical depression and named “Neneng,” the weather bureau said on Monday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Neneng was last spotted 120 kilometers (km) north of Basco, Batanes with maximum winds of 45 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gustiness of 60 km/h.

Storm signal no. 1 was raised in Batanes. Fishermen with small boats were advised not to venture out.

Moderate to occasional heavy rains will prevail over Babuyan Group of Islands, while Ilocos Norte and Apayao will have scattered rain showers with thunderstorms.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms.

Weathermen said “Mangkhut,” was last spotted at 2,440 km east of southern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of up to 140 km/h and gustiness of 170 km/h.

It may enter the country on Wednesday and will be named “Ompong.”

The weather bureau warned that “Mangkhut” may be as strong as typhoon Jebi, which smashed into Japan last week, leaving 7 people dead and a large swathe of destruction. JOVE MOYA
