Power cut as magnitude-6.4 quake hits Southern Mindanao

DAVAO CITY – A magnitude-6.4 quake shook parts of southern Mindanao on Saturday afternoon, causing panic, but so far there was no reported damage, according to the the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tremor, which was of tectonic origin, struck at 3:16 p.m., with its epicenter 14 kilometers northeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at a depth of focus of 28 kilometers.

Phivolcs cautioned the public that aftershocks might follow.

There were no reports of injuries as of this writing.

Power outages were reported in the town of Baganga and in the city of Mati.

In Davao City, some 250 kilometers west of the epicenter, people rushed out of buildings in panic as the shaking intensified for several seconds.

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council started conducting an assessment for possible damage to buildings and other structures, according to Rodrigo Bustillo, city disaster action officer.

In Davao Oriental, some areas have reported losing power amid the temblor, said Karen Deloso, provincial information officer.

There was still no report as to any damage in the town closest to the epicenter.

A landslide was also reported in an upland village in Manay.

The quake was also felt in Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Davao del Sur provinces. /atm
