PH karatekas scoop 10 golds in Singapore

The Philippines bagged 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals to pocket the overall championship crown in the 38th Karatedo Gojukai Singapore International Championships held at the Singapore Badminton Hall in Singapore.

Xavier School Greenhills standout Adam Bondoc led the charge of the Philippine squad after claiming the gold medal in the juniors 16-17 male individual kumite (fighting) event while Maryanne Janelle Yabut-Montalvo also delivered a gold in the seniors –55 kg. female individual kumite.

“It truly takes the commitment of the entire family, but to sum it up, it is actually a Blissful Chaos. Though family time has been challenging, it is always rewarding seeing Adam demonstrate integrity and perseverance while completely dedicated to pursuing his dream,” said Pamela Ortiz-Bondoc, mother of the Grade 12 student Adam.

Nicole Erika Dantes (female individual open kata 16-over), Krisanta Renzel Asistido (cadet 14-15 female individual kata), Joan Denise Lumbao (female individual kata 12-13), Emmanuel Jairus Sarmiento (male individual kata 12-13), John Daniel Cancela (boy’ 12-13 individual kumite), Victoria Isabel Arnedo (female individual kata 10-11), Sebastian Neil Manalac (male individual kumite 8-9) and Paulo Manuel Gorospe (male individual kata 8-9) also chipped in one gold each.

The silver medals were from Lumbao (female individual kumite 12-13), Sarmiento (male individual kumite 12-13), John Daniel (boy’ 12-13 individual kata), Gorospe (male individual kumite 8-9), Ashley Eunice Dantes (female individual kata and kumite 10-11) and Matthea Lazo (cadet female individual kata 14-15).

Nicole Erika (female individual kumite18-over – 55kg.), Asistido (cadet 14-15 female individual kumite), Arnedo (female individual kata 10-11), Manalac (male individual kata 8-9), John Kyle Tabilog (seniors –67 kg male individual kumite), Joanquin Gabriel Tomacruz (male individual kata 12-13) and Johan Emmanuel Cancela (male individual kumite 10-11) were the bronze winners.

The other members of the team were Rodrigo Javier Arnedo and Timothy Jake Hung, who both saw action in the male individual kumite/kata 8-9 category.

“Every year the competition gets bigger. Now we have nine countries participating in this tournament. The level is getting higher and more difficult, so, the more challenges, the better for the players to improve,” Association for the Advancement of Karatedo Philippines head coach Richard Lim said.
