Robredo to gov’t: Focus on solving inflation instead of ‘shutting down’ critics
VICE President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Thursday urged the government to stop focusing on silencing its critics and instead, come up with “coherent solutions” in solving the nine-year high inflation rate of 6.4 percent in August.
“Instead of shutting down those who dare to point out its inefficiencies, may the administration finally rise to the challenge of putting forward coherent solutions to bring down rising prices,” Robredo said in a statement.
Robredo said revoking the validity of the amnesty provided to Senator Antonio Trillanes 4th comes at a time when more important issues affecting the quality of life of the Filipinos were at stake.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation 572 revoking Trillanes’ amnesty after he failed to comply with the minimum requirements to qualify for the program.
Robredo said the government should instead pay attention to more pressing issues such as installing “competent and trustworthy leadership” at the National Food Authority (NFA) and revisiting the excise tax on fuel and any further impositions under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law.
She also recommended the reassessment of amount provided to beneficiaries of the unconditional cash transfer program “at the soonest possible time.”
“The Filipino people who suffer the brunt of such rising prices are not served by further politicking,” Robredo said.
The Vice President met earlier this week with other Liberal Party (LP) stalwarts to call for the passage of Senate Bill 1798 or the Bawas Presyo Bill filed by Sen. Paolo “Bam” Aquino 4th.
Marikina City Rep. Miro Qumbo had filed House Bill 8171 as its counterpart measure, seeking to roll back excise taxes on fuel to alleviate the effects of inflation. GLEE JALEA
