Trillanes to be placed under Senate custody
SEN. Antonio Trillanes 4th was placed on Monday under the custody of Senate President Vicente Sotto 3rd to avoid a “warrantless arrest” against Trillanes after his amnesty was revoked.
Trillanes and fellow members of the minority bloc, namely Senators Franklin Drilon, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino and Risa Hontiveros, met with Sotto to seek his advice on how to deal with Trillanes’ impending arrest.
“We just talked with Senate President Sotto and basically I was placed in the custody of the Senate President until my lawyers will file the necessary petitions before the Supreme Court to resolve this foolishness of Duterte and (Solicitor General Jose) Calida,” Trillanes said in a briefing.
“This is a warrantless arrest. Maliwanag ‘yan. Iyung mga arresting officers sa baba ay walang warrant. Duon kasi sa warrant nakalagay kung ano ang kaso mo. At kung may piyansa ka o wala (That’s clear. The arresting officers downstairs do not have a warrant. It is specified in the arrest warrant your case. And if you can post bail or not),” he said.
“So, in this case, nothing. So, we’re living basically in a ‘de facto’ martial law environment of the 1970s kind. The assurance given to me by the Senate President is that for as long as I’m in the Senate premises, he will not allow any arrest,” said Trillanes.
“What I’m questioning is the principle behind it. This is a warrantless arrest that I mentioned. So, we need to fight this warrantless arrest. Kahit sa buong mundo walang amnesty na binabawi. (Nowhere in the world has an amnesty been revoked),” Trillanes stressed.
