Robredo: ‘Competent NFA leaders’ needed to solve rice crisis
VICE President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Monday recommended that for the government to resolve the ongoing rice crisis and other issues plaguing the National Food Authority (NFA), competent leaders are needed.
“Ayusin ang NFA…magtalaga ng pinunong mahusay at mapagkakatiwalaan ng lahat (Fix the NFA…elect competent leaders whom the public can trust),” Robredo said in a press briefing at the Quezon City Reception House.
Liberal Party (LP) stalwarts Senators Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV, Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, and Marikina Rep. Miro Quimbo, who were also at the briefing, reiterated that they have long been calling for the resignation of NFA Administrator Jason Aquino.
“Ang problema, walang leadership na pinapakita sa problema sa bigas (the problem is there is no leadership that can address the rice crisis),” Aquino said.
Robredo also called for the suspension of excise taxes on petroleum products as provision under the Tax Reform Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law and the expansion of the Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT) program to aid the poor amid the rising prices of basic goods.
“They should also look at whether the P200-subsidy is enough for the beneficiaries. Other social protection initiatives under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P’s) should also be addressed,” the Vice President said. GLEE JALEA
