Rider killed, 3 hurt in Quezon road accident

LUCENA CITY – A motorcycle rider died and three others were hurt in a road accident in Infanta town in Quezon province Saturday night, police said.

In a report, Chief Insp. Lowell Atienza, Infanta police chief, said motorcycle driver Joselito Macaranas accidentally bumped Adena Opatorio, 62, while she was crossing the national road in Barangay (village) Banugao at about 7:30 p.m.

Macaranas and his two passengers, Jhay-Jhay Gaspar and Mhielverth Francia, were thrown off the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries, police said.

The victims were taken to Claro M. Recto Memorial District Hospital in Infanta but Macaranas died on the way to the hospital. The three other victims, including Opatorio, were confined at the said hospital.

Atienza said the three motorcycle riders were not wearing helmets.

The wearing of crash helmets for all riders of a two-wheeled motorized vehicle is mandated under Republic Act No. 10054, otherwise known the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009. /cbb
