No Filipino casualties, so far, in bridge collapse in Italy — DFA

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is monitoring the situation of the more than 1000 Filipinos in Northern Italy following the collapse of a highway bridge on Tuesday evening.

At the same time, the DFA expressed its sympathies to the families of the 35 people who died in the collapse of the Morandi highway bridge near Genoa.

In a statement, the DFA said that the Philippine Consulate General in Milan was still trying to determine if there were Filipinos in the tragedy.

The DFA said that Consul General Irene Susan Natividad dispatched Welfare Officer Jocelyn Hapal and Assistant to National Officer Sylvia de Guzman to the area to monitor the situation.

Initial reports coming from the team stated that a family of a Filipino woman were advised by authorities to evacuate their residence located at the foot of the bridge because of the danger posed by the structure.

The team also visited two hospitals where the dead and injured were taken but reported that no Filipinos were brought there.

Authorities in Genoa assured the consulate general that they would be informed if Filipinos were among the victims.
