Father-son tandem shines in Philippine Grant Tour Race
Paolo Ivan Santos and his father Paul cruised their way to the podium first and second, respectively, in the first race of the third leg of the 2018 Yokohama Philippine Grant Touring Championships held at the rain-soaked Clark International Speedway in Clark Field, Pampanga on July 22.
Carrying the colors of Team Shell Helix Ultra-Big Chill Racing, the father and son duo got off to a strong start in the first race that covered 10 laps. The Santoses came in 1-2 onboard their TS Tuning-Dax Santiano tuned Honda FD racecars despite the not so ideal road conditions brought about by the rains. The younger Santos posted a time record of 23:29.010, beating his father who came in 2.614 seconds later.
Paolo Santos seemed on his way to winning the second race as he was in the lead going into the last lap. However, he lost grip of his advantage and conceded the lead to Edwin Rodriguez who eventually won the race. The elder Santos showed consistency by finishing second anew while the younger Santos placed third.
The 2018 Yokohama Philippine Grant Touring Championships has already staged three out of six legs scheduled for the season, and the younger Santos occupies the driver’s seat as he leads all racers in the quest to be the 2018 National GT 200 Champion and Circuit Driver of the Year.
The team of the Santoses previously competed in the four-hour Philippine Endurance Challenge where they placed first overall. In the 12-hour Kalayaan Cup held last June 12, they placed third overall in their class.
