Basilan mulls state of calamity amid bombing, rice shortage, ‘cocosilap’ infestation
THE peace and order council of Basilan has recommended the declaration of a state of calamity after the province was hit simultaneously with man-made and natural disasters.
In a Facebook post, the provincial government said Governor Jim Hataman-Salliman, the peace and order council (PPOC) chairman, met with officials to discuss updates on the province’s security measures after the deadly bombing in Lamitan City that left 10 people dead and the rice shortage and coconut scale insect or “cocosilap” infestation.
“[The] PPOC recommended for a declaration of state of calamity in Basilan and was endorsed to [the]Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial council) for further discussion and approval,” according to the post.
“Other issues to [be]include[d]in the declaration are the ongoing manhunt operations in Moh Ajul LGU [local government unit and the], continuing cocolisap infestation and rice shortage being experienced in the province,” it added. DEMPSEY REYES
