PH Navy to help rescue Pinoys abducted in Libya

The Philippine Navy will assist the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in planning and mounting a mission to rescue three Filipinos kidnapped in Libya.

Commander Jonathan Zata, spokesman of the Philippine Navy, said liaison officer Captain Donn Miraflor has been instructed to coordinate with Boy Melicor, the Charge d’Affaires in Tripoli, Libya.

Three Filipinos and one South Korean, whose identities have not been confirmed, were abducted by an unidentified armed group at a water project in the southeastern part of Libya on July 6.

“Pursuant to the directive of the Commander in Chief, President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippine Navy composed of Fleet-Marine component is planning for the appropriate force package as response to the kidnapping of three Filipinos along with one South Korean national in Libya,” Zata said in a statement.

Duterte on Friday said that he was considering sending two frigates to Libya. He made the statement days after South Korea deployed a warship to rescue the victims.

The President said he would decide on the matter during a joint command conference on Tuesday.

He also said once the ship located the kidnappers, he would bomb the abductors if the hostages would not be released. ROY D.R. NARRA
