Suspect in Ombudsman prosecutor’s slay killed in scuffle with police

THE suspect tagged in the death of a prosecutor from the Office of the Ombudsman was shot dead over the weekend in a scuffle with a police escort inside Camp Karingal in Quezon City, police said.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Chief Joselito Esquivel said that Police Officer 3 Ramil Langa was bringing back Angelito Avenido, 31, to his cell at 10:45 a.m. when the suspect allegedly “grabbed his service firearm.”

A scuffle ensued inside the QCPD Criminal Investigation Detective Unit (CIDU) as the firearm went off with a bullet hitting Avenido on the lower part of his jaw, Esquivel said.

Avenido was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center but was pronounced dead at 11:31 a.m.

Retrieved from the scene were three fired cartridge cases from Langa’s caliber .40.

Avenido, who was tagged in the killing of Assistant Special Prosecutor Madonna Tayag, received a commitment order from the Regional Trial Court Branch 104 in Quezon City, which ordered him to take routine procedures inside CIDU before he his transfer to the Quezon City Jail.

As part of protocol, Langa surrendered his firearm to the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) for proper disposition.

Avenido, also known as Moymoy, was arrested on June 4 after allegedly stabbing Tayag three times. She had just attended a hearing at the Sandiganbayan. She was five months pregnant when Avenido attacked her as she boarded her vehicle on Visayas Avenue.“Nobody wanted this to happen. We immediately took the wounded detainee to the hospital so that he can still survive but he still died afterwards,” Esquivel said.

“The QCPD is open to any investigation on this matter,” he said.
