Davao del Norte trial judge applies for Chief Justice post

Davao del Norte trial court judge Virginia Tejano-Ang has applied for the vacant position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (SC).

This was confirmed by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra in a text message to reporters on Thursday.

Tejano-Ang is currently the Presiding Judge of the Tagum City, Davao del Norte Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 1.

In September 2014, Tejano-Ang had issued an arrest warrant against a suspect in the killing of a local radio anchor.

In December 2013, radio block-timer Rogelio “Tata” Butalid was leaving Radyo Natin station when a lone gunman fired a caliber .45 pistol against him.

The National Union Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) called Butalid’s killing and the string of other attacks against the media a “national catastrophe” and called for the immediate resolution of the cases.   /vvp
