10 Aegis Juris fratmen petition for bail after pleading not guilty in arraignment

TEN members of the Aegis Juris fraternity accused in the death of a freshman law student of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) pleaded not guilty during their arraignment and pre-trial and petitioned for bail before a Manila court on Tuesday.

Arvin Balag, Ralph Trangia, Oliver John Audrey Onofre, Mhin Wei Chan, Danielle Hans Matthew Rodrigo, Joshua Joriel Macabali, Axel Munro Hipe, Marcelino Bagtang, Jose Miguel Salamat, and Robin Ramos denied the charges filed by the family of Horacio “Atio” Castillo 3rd who died during the fraternity’s initiation rites in 2017.

Wearing yellow detainee shirts, the fratmen were brought before presiding Judge Marivic Balisi Umali of the Manila Trial Court Branch 20 from the city jail where they have been detained for their arraignment that lasted three hours.

Umali is expected to make a decision on their plea on August 14.

Castillo’s mother, Carmina, told reporters that she felt no remorse for the accused as she vowed to seek justice for her son and the dismantling of the Aegis Juris fraternity.

Castillo died in September 2017 from multiple injuries after undergoing initiation rites.

His death resulted in the amendment of the Anti-Hazing Act of 1995 that banned all forms of hazing and imposed stiffer penalties against the offenders. KIM MALAIT
