Pagasa: ‘Inday’ now a severe tropical storm, new LPA approaching PH

TROPICAL storm “Inday” (international name: Ampil) has intensified into a severe tropical storm as it moved northwestward, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Thursday.

As of 11 a.m., Inday was 925 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Basco, Batanes as it packed winds of 90 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 115 kph.

It is moving northwest at 15 kph and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Pagasa is monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) 475 km west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, but is still outside PAR. It may enter the Philippines over the weekend.

According to weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz, the LPA and “Inday” are enhancing the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” which will bring intermittent moderate to heavy rains over Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija.

The southwest monsoon will also bring scattered light to moderate with occasional rains over Metro Manila, and the rest of Luzon until Saturday.

Residents in these areas, especially those living in low-lying and mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate action against possible flooding and landslides and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, Pagasa said. GLEE JALEA
