Smart training helps Pacquiao regain deadly form
Strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune said that a “smart” training program designed specifically for Manny Pacquiao helped the Filipino ring icon regain his old deadly form.
“If he trains like that, he (Pacquiao), is going to be pretty much unbeatable,” Fortune told The Manila Times via overseas call upon his arrival in the US on Wednesday.
“Much more — train smart and avoid being overtrained — that Manny Pacquiao is going to beat a lot of people and still a very, very dangerous fighter.”
Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning played a big role in his 7th round technical knock out victory against Lucas Matthysse of Argentina on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Fortune said that Pacquiao’s resounding win against Matthysse is an indication that that there is still a lot of mileage left in the eight-division world champion.
“Great statement. Manny needs to make a statement,” added the former professional boxer Fortune, pertaining to Pacquiao’s latest knockout win since 2009 when he KOed Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas. “He is fast and strong. He is pretty unbeatable. I just saw that Manny is in control of the fight for the whole time.”
Fortune added that Buboy Fernandez did a great job of priming up Pacquiao and the win is Fernandez’s greatest achievement as a trainer.
“Of course, this is. This is a very much team effort this time and great training camp absolutely. Me, Buboy and Noy (Neri) — we talked among ourselves, see what works and doesn’t work,” said Fortune, who refused to comment when asked if Pacquiao’s former chief trainer Freddie Roach is coming back.
“No comment on that.”
