UV Express group seeks P1 per km provisional fare hike
A WEEK after the P9 minimum jeepney fare was implemented, a group of UV Express drivers and operators on Thursday filed a petition before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for a P1 per kilometer (km) provisional fare increase.
“The action on [our]instant fare hike petition is no less important as the UV Express sector is undeniably exposed to the same unrelenting escalation of gasoline prices and other related commodities that have burdened other transport sectors,” according to a portion of the petition filed by the Code-X transport service cooperative.
The four-page petition, signed by Code-X chief Rosalino Marable, sought to increase the fare from the current P2 for every kilometer to P3.
In an interview with reporters, Marable said it has been almost 11 years since the UV Express was granted a fare hike to charge its passengers.
“Our sector understands the plight of every commuter and riding public, but we also need to survive in order to earn a decent living,” he said.
The LTFRB previously issued a new jeepney fare matrix increasing the minimum jeepney fare for the first four kilometers in the National Capital Region, Regions 3 and 4 from P8 to P9.
The agency has yet to comment on Code-X’s fare increase petition. GLEE JALEA
