Visit of 3 US aircraft carriers to disputed waters shows ‘we care’—envoy
THE VISIT of three aircraft carriers in the South China Sea from the US shows that “it cares” about the developments in the disputed waters and in the entire Southeast Asian Region, its envoy said on Tuesday night.
“I will note that just this year we’ve had these three visits by US carriers and I think that sends an important signal that we care about developments in this region, we care about developments in South China Sea, and so that will not change either,” Ambassador to Manila Sung Kim said in an interview on the eve of US Independence Day in Makati City.
Kim said that while the South China Sea situation was complicated, the position of the US would remain unchanged and that was for all countries to act according to international laws and principles.
“Our position I think has been very clear. We believe all countries should act according to international law and principles,” Kim said in response to a question about President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement that the US was not helping the Philippines enough in the South China Sea.
In February, the USS Carl Vinson strike group arrived in Manila for a five-day port visit, followed by the USS Theodore Roosevelt in April and USS Ronald Reagan in June. JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA
