Task force formed to probe Tanauan Mayor Halili’s death
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna – A special investigation task group (SITG) was created to investigate the killing of a mayor in Batangas on Monday, a police official said on Monday.
Chief Supt. Edward Carranza, provincial regional director of Calabarzon, said the SITG would be composed of representatives from Region 4-A’s Investigation Division, Regional Intelligence Division, Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Regional Crime Laboratory, Regional Legal Service and Batangas Police Provincial Office.
Sr. Supt. Nolasco Bathan, Regional Deputy Director for Operations of PRO Calabarzon, will head the inquiry.
Tanauan Mayor Antonio Halili was shot dead while attending the traditional flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall on Monday morning.
Halili was declared dead on arrival at the CP Reyes Hospital in Tanauan City after sustaining a single gunshot wound on his chest.
Initial investigation showed that the gunman was positioned on a hilly and grassy portion of a vacant lot about 150 meters away from where Halili was standing.
In October 2017, the National Police Commission (Napolcom) stripped Halili of his supervision over police after he was allegedly included in President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of politicians linked to drugs.
Halili has denied this.
Ironically, Halili has been known to parade his drug suspects and criminals around the city in a “walk of shame.” ROSELLE R. AQUINO
