Otis Bridge in Manila closed; motorists advised to take alternate routes
MOTORISTS headed to Manila have been advised to avoid roads surrounding the Otis Bridge, which was closed midnight of Tuesday as it showed signs of collapsing as indicated by its numerous cracks.
In an advisory, the Manila Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit (MPD- MDTEU) said all vehicles from the southbound lane of Nagtahan or Mabino Bridge intending to turn right at Paz Guanzon Street to United Nations Avenue, must take President Quirino Avenue instead, then turn right at Plaza Dilao and straight to President Quirino Avenue extension.
Meanwhile, all vehicles eastbound of United Nations Avenue intending to utilize Paz Guanzon Street must turn right to President Quirino Avenue to Plaza Dilao to their point of destination.
According to Department of Public Works (DPWH) and Highways Engineer Mike Makud it may take 18 months to reconstruct the bridge.
He said that if the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) would allow total closure, however, it would only take nine months to reconstruct the bridge. KIM MALAIT
