New records posted in PSL Ormoc tilt

Eight new records were established, five of which were courtesy of Palarong Pambansa champion Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh in the 139th Philippine Swimming League (PSL) National Series—st Piña Swimming Cup being held at the Sembrano Aquatic Center in Ormoc City, Leyte.

Mojdeh opened her campaign with a new record in the girls’ 12-year 200m individual medley, registering two minutes and 29.70 seconds to erase the 2:43.06 old mark of Charize Juliana Esmero four years ago.

Mojdeh continued her impressive showing with new records in the 50m freestyle with a time of 28.90 seconds, better than the 29.47 previous record of Jesreel Francisco in 2014, and in 200m freestyle, with 2:16.72 eclipsing the 2:20.93 former mark of Aubrey Bermejo in 2015.

She completed a five-event sweep, by notching new records in the 50m butterfly (29.78) and 50m breaststroke (35.45) in the tournament supported by The Manila Times, MX3, DMI Medical Co. and Ormoc Kingfisher Swimming Team.

Local standouts Coby Marcus Rivilla, Chloe Sophia Laurente and Martina Anela Estrella of the Ormoc Kingfisher Swimming Team also established new records in their respective events.

Rivilla, a veteran of Palarong Pambansa, topped the boys’ 10-year 200m IM in 2:43.57 to surpass the 2:44.10 record of Marc Bryan Dula.

On the other hand, Laurente dominated the girls’ 12-year 50m backstroke in 32.72 seconds, better than the old 33.00 mark, while Estrella posted a new record of 35.59 seconds in winning the girls’ 9-year 50m backstroke event — a few seconds faster than the old record of 37.03.

“We are so overwhelmed with the showing of these kids—so much potential at their very young age. It’s such a fulfilling feeling seeing them improve and break records from time to time,” said PSL president Susan Papa.

The other gold medalists in the opening day were Lee Grant Cabral, Ysabella Anne Hermoso, Rex Amdre Dela Cruz, Alana Quimbo, Alexa Larrazabal, Ralph Matres Jr., Albert Sermonia II, Maria Beatriz Cimafranca, Jan Kyle Malinao, Deniece Villarta, Phil Michael Tabudlong, Lourdes Valendez, Marya Arado, Archilles Silva, Mary Lane Enrile, Gazey Cuyos, Zoilo Larrazabal and Marie Daffon.
