Unido launches first PH program
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido) has launched its first country program for the Philippines on the occasion of a visit by the UN agency’s chief, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said on Friday.
“The country program is proof of Unido’s continuing support for the Philippines and our common desire to achieve inclusive and environmentally sustainable growth that will benefit all parts of society, with all people being given equal opportunities for prosperity,” Unido Director-General Li Yong was quoted as saying in a joint statement.
The country program will focus on “supporting inclusive, sustainable, and innovation-led industrialization; fostering green and resilient industrial communities; and cultivating effective partnerships for inclusive and sustainable development,” the NEDA said.
It will ultimately “support the government’s efforts to revitalize manufacturing in selected sectors, and to develop the biotech industry”.
The UN agency’s current portfolio for the Philippines covers industry, energy, environment, and post-disaster economic recovery sectors. Initiatives under this will be continued under the country program, which will run from 2018 to 2023.
The NEDA said that Li’s visit coincided with the 25th anniversary of the signing of a basic cooperation agreement between Unido and the Philippines.
The UN agency’s work in the country, Socieconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said, had helped advance industrial development.
“Unido’s presence in the Philippines has been instrumental in fostering an inclusive and sustainable industrial sector.” Pernia said, adding that it also complemented the 2017-2022 Philippine Development Plan and the AmBisyon Natin 2040 program.
