When situations become stressful, strengthen the protective factors
by Marilyn C. Arayata
Are you hurting? Do you worry about anything? If you are hurting and worrying, you are not alone. Countless people are now struggling due to separation, break-up, illnesses in the family, mounting debts and bills, bullying, abuses, conflict at work, pressures in the business, a family mess, a disrespectful child, a school requirement, immigration concerns, and uncertainty at work.
How many are worrying about a competition and hurting due to an unkind remark, a tainted image, and an undeserved treatment?
There has to be a limit to sulking and worrying. Unfulfilled expectations and worries of every kind may lead to anxiety and depression.
The rich and famous have their concerns, too, and many of them become depressed. We have heard of some who died in an apparent suicide. What can shield people from depression and suicide?
Do you at least talk about it when the going gets tough and do you seek help when you think you can’t handle the situation alone? Do you have strong connections to family and friends? Do you have a sense of personal control? Do you have aspirations in life? Do you take care of your health and wellness? If you answered “Yes” to these questions, you have personal protective factors that make it less likely that you will sink into despair and entertain suicidal thoughts.
The US Public Health Service mentioned the following factors that buffer individuals from suicidal thoughts and behavior: skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent ways of handling disputes, cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide and support instincts for self-preservation.
Optimism, responsibility to others, avoiding alcohol and drugs, restricted access to weapons and chemicals, a reasonably safe environment, and spirituality are also very important, according to experts. Having a “me” time ought to be a priority, too.You need to take care of yourself. You can not give what you do not have. It’s impossible to function well and take care of your loved ones if you are not okay physically, emotionally, and mentally. Strengthen all these protective factors, especially when situations become stressful.Be strong!
