Public transport reminded of 20% discount to students
THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) on Sunday to give 20 percent fare discount to students even on weekends, holidays, and vacations, as schools open on Monday.
“Balik eskwela na po, reminding all PUV to provide student discounts, 20 percent kahit holiday, kahit Sunday, kahit Saturday, 24/7, 365 days, kahit bakasyon, kahit semestral break, kahit Christmas break,” LTFRB Board Member Aileen Lizada said.
“Iyon ang bagong patakaran ng LTFRB,” Lizada said.
(That is the new LTFRB policy.)
Lizada was referring to Memorandum Circular 2017-024, issued on October 28, 2017 to amend MC 2005-014, that expanded the 20 percent discount given to students to include weekends, holidays, and summer breaks.
Lizada said that students must present their IDs to avail of the discounts. Meanwhile, students of post-graduate degrees and short-term courses are not qualified, while vocational and technical school students may avail of the discount under Memorandum Circular 2017-024.
The 20 percent discount covers jeepneys, buses, taxis, vans, and express service franchises.
Drivers who refuse to comply will be fined P2,000 on the first offense; P3,000 and suspension of franchise for the second offense; and P5,000, as well as cancellation of franchise on the third offense. REICELENE JOY N. IGNACIO, GLEE JALEA
