Alaska Aces’ Jeron Teng, 2 others hurt in brawl at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig

THREE Philippine basketball players were stabbed in a brawl at the Bonifacio Globa City in Taguig before dawn on Sunday, police said.

The victims were identified as Jeron Teng of the Alaska Aces and Norberto Torres of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA); and Thomas Torres of the Mandaluyong El Tigre of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. The three men all played with the De La Salle Green Archers at the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

Southern Police District (SPD) spokesperson Jenny Tecson told The Manila Times in a text message that the suspects, who were arrested, were identified as Edmar Manalo, 40; Joseph Varona, 33; and William Basili, 38.

Initial investigation showed that the Teng’s group was walking outside the Early Night Club at Fort Strip at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when Manalo and his peers called the attention of the three players. A heated argument ensued that led to a brawl and the stabbing of Teng and another player.

Tecson said that the injured were rushed to nearby St. Luke’s Medical Hospital.

Before the incident, Teng was coming off a game between the Alaska Aces, and GlobalPort Batang Pier, which Alaska won 109-103, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Jeron’s brother, Jeric, plays for GlobalPort.

Alaska and Rain or Shine have yet to release statements. JAMES KONSTANTIN GALVEZ and ARIC JOHN SY CUA
